Energetic BEM-FEM coupling for the numerical solution of the damped wave equation

چکیده
Time-dependent problems modeled by hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) can be reformulated in terms of boundary integral equations (BIEs) and solved via the boundary element method (BEM). In this context, the analysis of damping phenomena that occur in many physics and engineering problems is of particular interest. Starting from a recently developed energetic space-time weak formulation for the coupling of BIEs and PDEs related to wave propagation problems [1, 2, 3], we consider here an extension for the damped wave equation in layered media. A coupling algorithm is presented, which allows a flexible use of FEM and BEM as local discretization techniques. Stability and convergence have been proved by energy arguments. These properties are crucial in guaranteeing accurate solutions for simulations on large time intervals. Several numerical results on 1D model problems, confirming theoretical results, are presented and discussed.

Stiffeners Mechanical Effect Analysis by Numerical Coupling
Given any structure, we seek to find the solution of mechanical problem as precisely and efficiently as possible. Within this condition, the BEM is robust and promising development, standing out in the analysis of cases with occurrence of large stress gradients, as in problems of fracture mechanics. Moreover, in BEM the modeling of infinite means is performed naturally, without the use of appro...

The analysis of damping phenomena that occur in many physics and engineering problems, such as fluid dynamics, kinetic theory and semiconductors, is of particular interest. For this kind of problems, one needs accurate and stable approximate solutions even on large time intervals. These latter can be obtained reformulating time-dependent problems modeled by partial differential equations (PDEs)...

In this paper, we model and solve the problem of optimal shaping and placing to put sensors for a 3-D wave equation with constant damping in a bounded open connected subset of 3-dimensional space. The place of sensor is modeled by a subdomain of this region of a given measure. By using an approach based on the embedding process, first, the system is formulated in variational form;...

In this paper, a hybrid FEM/BEM approach for solving Maxwell's equations in the frequency domain is presented. The method can be applied to uniform transmission lines and waveguides containing anisotropic and lossy media. Based on a rigorous full-wave analysis, frequency-dependent propagation constants and electromagnetic elds can be obtained. Spurious solutions which usually appear when applyi...
